SAN DIEGO–Young Audiences of San Diego (YASD) will hold its 2012 Summer Sol gala celebration, “Warming Hearts, Waking Minds” on August 18 at the Fairbanks Ranch Association Clubhouse in Del Mar.
The event is YASD’s annual major fund raiser, bringing in more than $35,000 for programs that bring artists directly into schools for intensive interaction with K-12 students. The 2012 Summer Sol Honoree is Ron Jessee, retiring Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts for the San Diego County Office of Education.
To date, Summer Sol: Warming Hearts, Waking Minds has attracted significant underwriting support from San Diego businesses and individuals. Leading corporate donors is the San Diego-based WD-40 Company, which is contributing $2,500. Other corporate contributors include The Learning Moment, a leadership development agency, with a gift of $2,000, and OneSource Distributors, a major regional supplier of electrical products, providing $1,500 to Summer Sol: Warming Hearts, Waking Minds. An individual donation of $5,000 has been made by an anonymous benefactor. The Dr. Seuss Foundation has contributed $1,500.And radio station KSDS Jazz 88.3 is providing $1,000 in promotional services for the event.
Tara Graviss, co-chair of Summer Sol: Warming Hearts, Waking Minds with Young Audiences and emeritus executive director Hilliard Harper, announced the new contributions during a recent visit by YA’s national review panel.
Event organizers say the generous gifts of support by the business community are a reminder that the corporate world “understands that the arts develop skills that companies need: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity.”
(YASD) has served students, teachers and artists for 49 years. YASD’s extraordinary range of high quality performances, residencies and workshops integrate the arts into the education and lives of children in the region. YASD provides professional development for teachers and artists and leads the community in advocating for more arts education in schools. Part of a national organization founded in 1952, Young Audiences of San Diego inspires, motivates and challenges children, building critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills, helping young people identify their cultural roots, developing creative, disciplined and visionary future leaders. In the 2010-2011 school year Young Audiences served over 53,000 students with 3,500 programs in 168 schools throughout San Diego County.
