Sheriff’s Dept. To Handout Gift Cards For Unwanted Guns

October 20, 2015 By sdcnews

SAN MARCOS–If you have an unwanted gun, you can turn it in and get a gift card in return, no questions asked.

The San Marcos Sheriff’s Station is hosting a Guns for Gift Cards event on October 24 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station, 182 Santar Place in San Marcos.

Residents will receive $50 for rifles and shotguns; $100 for handguns, and $150 for assault weapons.

There is a limit of $200 worth of gift cards per vehicle. The gift cards can be redeemed at Walmart stores.

The Sheriff’s Department utilized $25,000 in asset forfeiture funds to purchase the gift cards. Oceanside and Carlsbad police officers also contributed $2,500 and $1,000 to purchase the gift cards.

Anyone participating should place the unloaded firearms in the trunks of their cars. A uniformed deputy or officer will give instructions at the location. All weapons collected will be destroyed.

The event is being held in partnership with Oceanside, Carlsbad, Cal State San Marcos, CHP, Escondido, Palomar College Police, and the District Attorney’s Office.
