Sheriff’s Department to hold youth alcohol and drug abuse discussion

May 17, 2010 By Staff

IMPERIAL BEACH–The San Diego Sheriff’s Department will present a community forum on youth alcohol and drug abuse in Imperial Beach.

The forum is designed to educate parents on their responsibilities and the potential consequences when alcohol is involved in the lives of their children. The forum will also discuss prescription drug abuse by teens.

Speakers at the forum will include a supervising investigator from the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control and a prescription drug abuse expert from the Sheriff’s Department. Several of the San Diego Charger players will be on hand at the forum to support the efforts of the Sheriff’s Department and present their message on teen alcohol and drug use.

Here are some staggering statistics related to youth alcohol and prescription drug use:

A teenager is killed in a traffic accident every 70 minutes nationwide.

375,000 teenagers are injured in traffic accidents each year, whether they were operating the vehicle or just a passenger.

Teens feel using prescription drugs to get high is “much safer” than street drugs.

It is estimated that almost 30 million people used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons in 2008.

The forum will be held Monday, May 17 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Mar Vista High School, New Athletic Complex 505 Elm Ave. in Imperial Beach. Enter from Imperial Beach Blvd. entrance (east of football field)
