SAN DIEGO–A Northern California sex offender, convicted in South Bay of forcible lewd act on a child, attempted kidnapping, robbery and attempted robberies, received a 195 year-to-life sentence.
Leonard Scroggins, 34, was sentenced Monday morning to 150 years plus an additional 45 years in state prison by Superior Court Judge George Clarke.
“Our South Bay Branch and in particular, Deputy District Attorney Enrique Camarena, have done an outstanding job pursuing justice in this case,” District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said. “Thanks to this conviction, a sex offender is off the streets and will spend the rest of his life in prison.”
Scroggins, who has a history of sexual assault attacks in Northern California, has two previous felony convictions. Scroggins had broken off his sexual registrant GPS bracelet and then traveled to San Diego County, where he committed his latest crimes. Scroggins’ prior convictions place him square under the state’s Three Strikes law, which significantly increases the potential punishments for repeat offenders. He was arrested following a manhunt after he had stolen a woman’s purse as she walked down a street and attempted to kidnap a 13-year-old National City girl at knife point.
