SAN DIEGO–An estimated 1.08 million gallon sewage spill was reported to County of San Diego officials by a Camp Pendleton staffer.
The spill was discovered this morning and was the result of a damaged sewer main carrying secondarily treated effluent. The sewer main was damaged by the flood waters of San Mateo Creek.
The release was estimated to have begun on December 21st during the heavy rainfall that led to the creek flooding. The release was identified as being approximately 3 miles from the ocean outfall. Signs warning of sewage-contaminated water have been posted and will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
