Sewage-contaminated runoffs from Tijuana Estuary closes beaches

January 19, 2010 By sdcnews

SAN DIEGO COUNTY–The Department of Environmental Health has extended the water contact closure for south county beaches north to include the Imperial Beach, Silver Strand, and Coronado ocean shorelines due to sewage-contaminated runoff from the Tijuana Estuary.

River flows entering the estuary increased after rain yesterday afternoon. Field measurements indicate northward moving ocean currents near the mouth of the Tijuana Estuary. Signs warning of sewage contaminated water will remain in place until field measurements indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use.

For more information on the Tijuana River, please call the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission at (619) 662-7600. For updates on beach closure information, call the 24-hr. hotline at (619) 338-2073, or visit www.sdbeachinfo.com.
