Save A Life Walk Brings Awareness Of Mental Illness And Suicide

SAN DIEGO–In the United State a person dies by suicide every 14 minutes, claiming over 40,000 lives each year. Last year, 420 died by suicide in San Diego county.

Hundreds of people will gather at Balboa Park at 6th and Laurel to remember loved ones lost to suicide at the Save A Life Walk this Sunday.

The solemn walk will feature remembrance activities, a large resource fair, and symbolic dove release.

Check-in and registration from 6:30 to 8:00 a.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 8:00 a.m.

Proceeds from the event will benefit two local outreach and prevention programs: Survivors of Suicide Loss (SOSL) and the San Diego Chapter of Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program. 100% of funds raised stay in San Diego county.

Suicide affects all ages — youth, students, professionals, seniors, and crosses all cultural, economic, and social boundaries. It is the second leading cause of non-natural death in San Diego County, second to auto accident. Among 15 to 24 year olds, suicide is the second leading cause of death nationally and locally.

Firearms are used in more suicides than homicides. Presently, suicides outnumber homicides by more than 6 to 1 in the region.

Family and friends who have lost a loved one to suicide. All persons interested in decreasing stigma about mental illness, preventing suicide, and supporting those who have a lost a loved one to suicide.

The good news – suicide is a preventable health problem – the key is early detection and treatment.
