San Ysidro School District Holds Annual Blanket Drive For Students In Need

November 22, 2016 By sdcnews

SAN YSIDRO–San Ysidro School District is looking to collect 1,500 blankets for children and families in need during its annual blanket drive “Project Dream.”

The District is asking for adult-sized blankets to cover those of all sizes.

“The San Ysidro School District is committed to supporting all of our students and families,” SYSD Superintendent Dr. Julio Fonseca said. “With the help of our community partners and leaders, we can ensure our children and families in need sleep warm at night.”

Last year, the District provided 120 families with blankets during a special holiday dinner and Christmas gift giveaway funded by one of its corporate partners.

“Project Dream is much more than a blanket drive,” said Veronica Medina, SYSD student and family services manager and drive coordinator. “It shows our children and families that they have a significant place in our community and are cared for by many people.”

Blanket donations will be accepted through Dec. 15 at the District Office, 4350 Otay Mesa Road, San Ysidro. The District will distribute the blankets at upcoming holiday events.

“The Project Dream blanket drive offers the entire San Ysidro community with an opportunity to get involved and positively impact our students,” Board President Marcos A. Diaz said. “We look forward to surpassing the remarkable results from last year’s drive.”

The first distribution will be at Breakfast with CS Keys on Saturday, Dec. 17 at the Tilted Kilt in Mission Valley, where SYSD is aiming to feed up to 75 kids and 25 adults. The second distribution will take place at the Kearny Mesa Bowl with Athletes for Education on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Students will bowl with professional athletes and receive a toy and a blanket for participating.

After the holidays, families needing blankets will be invited to stop by the District Office.
