San Ysidro kindergarteners are creating a scene

May 29, 2010 By Staff

SAN YSIDRO–The Front, Casa Familiar’s brand new arts, culture, and community development center has done much in recent years to expose the San Diego community to the wonders of the art world. The gallery in the rehabbed Louis Guild Building has exhibited the works of such renowned artists as Marcos “ERRE” Ramirez, Beliz Iristay, Teddy Cruz, Guillermo Nericcio, Gustavo Arellano and Acamonchi to name a few, and this June, will have quite a special group of artists to add to this impressive list.

“De Colores: The Art of the Kindergartener” will feature the artwork of 150 kindergarteners from Beyer Elementary, Smythe Elementary, and Sunset Elementary all schools in the San Ysidro School District. The exhibit will be divided into three different mini-exhibits, with opening receptions happening on the 2, 3 and 4 Wednesday of the month of June from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Front, 147 W. San Ysidro Blvd, in San Ysidro. The opening receptions will also feature live musical selections from the districts own, Escuela de Musica.

This very special art exhibit is pioneered by San Ysidro School District’s Assistant Superintendant, Gloria Madera, whose think-outside-the-box style and si se puede attitude empowered her to find a creative solution to budget-cuts: outsourcing. Madera tapped into community partnerships and resources to bring visual and performing arts to nearly 150 kindergarten students through the art program Young Rembrandts.

“We are excited about the strong partnership between Young Rembrandts, Escuela de Música, Casa Familiar, and the San Ysidro School District. The artists are producing outstanding art and the children are thoroughly engaged and interested in what they are learning,” said Gloria Madera. “This will be a wonderful way to showcase their talent with the families and community.”

“San Ysidro School District students and parents are thrilled about the masterpieces these children are creating. When we hear the students make the connection between their English language development and their drawings, that’s when we know we did it right,” said Lisa Yegin, Executive Director for Young Rembrandts in the South San Diego area.

The free art showcase will run for three-weeks at The Front located on San Ysidro Blvd from June 7 – 25. The public is welcome to attend.
