SAN DIEGO–Retired Sheriff’s Captain Leland McPhie celebrates his 99th birthday on March 10. To celebrate the special occasion, law enforcement officers and friends will gather at the Sheriff’s Museum in Old Town for a birthday party March 6.
Captain McPhie joined the Sheriff’s department in 1940 working in the old jail-facility prior to Central Jail in downtown San Diego. Capt. McPhie retired as a captain in 1968. He is the oldest retired deputy in San Diego County.
Capt. McPhie took 2-½ years off from his law enforcement career to serve in World War II. He also wrote the first Policy and Procedure, or manual for deputies who work in the
jail.
His advice to new deputies, “get as much education as you can to have a long and successful career.”
