SAN DIEGO–San Diego Unified School District honored 96 graduating seniors for their academic achievement at the 2011 Salute to Excellence ceremony held Thursday at SeaWorld San Diego’s Nautilus Pavilion.
School board members presented medals and a commemorative pen to the valedictorians ranked in the top one percent in the district’s class of 2011.
The event included remarks by Board of Education President Richard Barrera, Superintendent Bill Kowba, Congresswoman Susan Davis, Laura Slanec, director of education, SeaWorld San Diego, valedictorians Taylor Fugere-Cale, 18, a graduating senior from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, and Joshua Yang ,16, of University City High School.
