SAN DIEGO — Mayor Jerry Sanders has formally endorsed Bonnie Dumanis for the next Mayor of the City of San Diego saying she is “the best choice to make sure efforts to reform city government continue to move forward.” In a letter to supporters, Sanders cited Dumanis’ proven leadership, chief executive experience and strength as a consensus-builder as examples of why he strongly supports her.
“I’ve known Bonnie Dumanis for nearly 20 years and I’m confident she has the experience to keep San Diego moving in the right direction and to continue restoring our fiscal health,” Mayor Sanders said. “Bonnie has a solid reputation of integrity and telling it like it is. I trust her to build on the progress we’ve already made and keep our economy moving, while protecting public safety.”
Sanders, a police chief prior to being elected San Diego Mayor, pointed to Dumanis’ innovative leadership as a three-time elected District Attorney. “Bonnie took the reins at a difficult time and was able to build consensus in a divided District Attorney’s Office. She is the only candidate who’s run a large government organization with a $140 million budget and has a proven track record of bringing change and increased efficiency to government,” said Mayor Sanders.
Dumanis took over a troubled District Attorney’s Office that had not seen any real change for more than three decades. Working together with 1,000 staff and three labor organizations, she implemented a Business Management Plan, and a new level of accountability. Under her direction, a once-divided office came together to provide effective, efficient public safety to San Diego. “No other candidate has that kind of experience,” said Sanders.
“I’m honored to have the endorsement of Mayor Sanders,” said Dumanis. “Jerry has led us through one of the most difficult times in the recent history of this city. We should all be grateful for his leadership and guidance.”
Bonnie Dumanis is a 37-year San Diego resident, former Superior Court Judge and three-time elected District Attorney. Throughout her career, Dumanis has been a team builder, innovator and organizational strategist. “We need Bonnie’s mix of executive government experience and no nonsense approach in the coming years to continue our financial recovery,” said Mayor Sanders. “I believe this election is critically important and I hope San Diegans will join me in supporting Bonnie Dumanis for Mayor.”
