SAN DIEGO–This summer, residents of the Rolando neighborhoods will be treated to a free summer concert series, thanks to the Rolando Community Council, with the support of College Area Community Council, the College Area Business Improvement District, Rolando Park Community Council and a variety of local businesses.
Part of a grassroots drive to connect neighbors and strengthen the community, the family-friendly concerts will be held at Clay Park at 4759 Seminole Drive in San Diego, and will feature popular local bands.
“We want Rolando to be our first choice for fun.” said Rolando resident and Event Organizer, Jolyne Harris. “Whether it’s dinner, shopping or a concert in the park – we’re encouraging neighbors to think local and support our community.”
The Bayou Brothers will kick the series off on July 19 with a sound straight out of Louisiana’s backyard crawfish boils. San Diego Music Award winner Steph Johnson brings her blend of soul, R&B and jazz to the stage on August 9, sharing the bill with dynamic drummer Monette Marino and her 7-piece band. Both concerts begin at 4:30pm and last until 7:30 p.m.
“There are so many mini-neighborhoods in Rolando – Rolando Knolls, Rolando Park, and Rolando Village – even part of La Mesa. This is a great opportunity for all of us to come together and meet each other, as well as for neighbors to reach out to new residents and get them involved in the community”, said Rolando Community Council Treasurer, Karen Sherman.
The new concert series will launch on July 19 with a special unveiling of a new mosaic art installation at Clay Elementary, created for the community’s enjoyment by the students of Clay Elementary. Food trucks, face painters and other entertainers will join the festivities both nights to create a fun atmosphere that can be enjoyed by all. The concerts are free and open to the public. Lawn seating is on a first-come basis and the audience is encouraged to bring blankets, beach chairs and picnics. Alcohol is not permitted.
