EL CAJON–Two individuals are without a home after a structure fire Saturday morning destroyed their El Cajon residence.
Heartland Fire and Rescue crews responded to a report of a residential structure fire in the 500 block of Millar Ave with a report of black smoke coming from a house.
Fire crews arrived in five minutes to discover heavy fire and smoke coming from the front windows of a single story, single family residence.
Fire crews stretched hose lines to the interior of the house and aggressively fought the fire while a truck crew simultaneously cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the structure. The coordinated attack confined the fire to the residence of origin.
Fire investigators were not able to determine the exact cause of origin, but a portable space heater in a bedroom was believed to be the cause of the fire. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at approximately $80,000.
Red Cross assisted the two adults with shelter.
