SAN DIEGO–San Diego Health and Human Services Agency reports that a bat found at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park earlier this month has tested positive for rabies.

The agency says park staff found the bat alive September 9 near the entrance doors to the Oasis Deli in Nairobi Village. The bat was sent to the County last weekend and testing confirmed the animal had rabies.

Anyone who was in the park on Sept. 9, and directly handled the rabid bat is urge to call the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency at (619) 692-8499.

Rabies transmission can occur from a bat bite or if a bat’s saliva comes in contact with a cut or abrasion, or with a person’s mucous membranes, such as the eyes, nose or mouth.

Anyone with direct contact with a bat should wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and get medical advice immediately.
