Police Lieutenant Graduates Exclusive LAPD Leadership Program

July 25, 2012 By sdcnews

Carlsbad Police Lieutenant Paul Mendes

CARLSBAD–Carlsbad Police Lieutenant Paul Mendes graduated July 19 from the exclusive Los Angeles Police Department Leadership Program. The 136 hour four week college accredited program was held at the LAPD police academy facility.

Members of law enforcement agencies from all over California apply to attend this select program that teaches officers how to think more systematically about leadership, challenges and situation. The course teaches 27 behavioral science and adult education theories compiled from top universities in the nation.

In 1996, LAPD adapted the United States Military Academy at West Point Leadership and Command Program to meet the needs of California law enforcement.  West Point faculty trained LAPD facilitators to reproduce the program in Los Angeles.

“It was a terrific opportunity to network with leaders in the law enforcement community,” said Mendes. “I appreciated the opportunity and the department support.”

“We are very proud of Lt. Mendes for displaying his desire to be a lifelong learner,” said City of Carlsbad Police Chief Gary Morrison.  “Also, we are fortunate that Mendes will be bringing the leadership knowledge and skills back to Carlsbad Police Department.”

Mendes graduated with 22 other officers representing agencies throughout California.
