SAN DIEGO–The San Diego Police Department has been awarded a $409,000 grant from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol-related collisions.
The grant will fund DUI checkpoints, DUI saturation patrols, equipment purchases, training and other operations conducted by the police department targeting drinking drivers.
The primary focus of the DUI checkpoints is to educate individuals on the dangers of driving while impaired and to arrest those individuals who still do not heed the message to designate a sober driver. The checkpoints and other operations will take place throughout the City of San Diego.
Last year, the police department arrested over 4700 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol and investigated over 800 collisions where alcohol was a factor.
