Rancho Santa Fe, CA–This summer, the surf isn’t just for humans but also for their furry companions.
The Helen Woodward Animal Center is set to host its 19th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon at Del Mar Dog Beach on September 8, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Presented by Blue Buffalo, this event has become the longest-running surf dog competition in the country and a beloved tradition for dog lovers.
As the event approaches, top surf-dog contenders and eager groMUTTS have been preparing to showcase their skills. The Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon is more than just a fun day at the beach; it’s a platform to raise life-saving funds for orphaned pets. Since its inception, the event has demonstrated that dogs can do extraordinary things on and off the board.
The competition will feature approximately 50 dogs competing in 10-minute heats, judged by a panel of surf experts. SurFURs will be evaluated on the length of their ride, wave technique, enthusiasm, and confidence on the board. Winners will be crowned in various weight classes, with the top dogs advancing to the finals to win the coveted title of Best-In-Surf. For those looking to add a creative twist, a freestyle surf contest that awards points for costumes and special tricks.
“The Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon is a crowd favorite every year,” said Eva Lagudi-Devereux, Special Events Manager at the Helen Woodward Animal Center. “Anyone who loves dogs knows they possess incredible talents and abilities. This event is proof of that.”
In addition to the surfing competition, the event will feature family-friendly activities, including live beach music, a Canine Costume Contest with a “Classic Americana” theme, a free Kid’s Activity area, and a BARKet Place with pet-focused exhibitors. There will also be a free dog agility course sponsored by San Diego Pet Training, a special ceremony honoring Surf Dog legend Samson, and an exciting awards ceremony.
For those unable to attend in person, the event will be livestreamed on Facebook at 8:30 a.m. Surf-loving canines can still register for the surf and freestyle contests, with 100% of the proceeds supporting the Helen Woodward Animal Center’s life-saving work. Top fundraising dogs will be rewarded with fantastic prizes.
The 19th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon is free to attend, with parking available for a $20 donation at designated locations.
