San Diego, CA–San Diego County animal shelters are waiving adoption and microchip fees through July 7.
This initiative, part of the Department of Animal Services’ “Stars, Stripes, and Snuggles” promotion, started on June 16 and coincides with the Fourth of July holiday—a period when shelters typically see an influx of animals due to fireworks.
The shelters, like many across the United States, are grappling with overcrowding. Community support is urgently needed to make a lifesaving impact on the homeless pet population.
Residents in the county service area can also get free microchipping to help reunite lost pets, ensuring that families are not broken up, even temporarily, due to startling noises.
Pets in panic mode often bolt, putting them at risk of traffic accidents, getting lost, or being attacked by other animals. Pets need to wear collars with identifying information. Microchips facilitate quicker reunions once scanned.
Bring pets inside to a quiet, secure room during fireworks. Even pets who have never escaped should not be left in the yard. White noise, sleep machines, televisions, or radios can help distract them from the noise.
For pets particularly distressed by loud noises, stay home with them or arrange for someone they like to be with them. Veterinarians may also suggest anxiety-relieving medication for pets who are especially terrified.
Potential adopters can find their new best friend by browsing the county shelters’ online animal listings. Available pets include cats, dogs, bunnies, a tortoise, a guinea pig, fowl, and pigs. Due to the popularity of the adoption special, Animal Services staff recommend picking out second and third choices in case the first choice is already adopted.
Adoption fees are waived for senior adopters, senior pets, and pets waiting for their forever home for 30 days or more.
Shelters are open for walk-ins from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Visit the South Shelter at 5821 Sweetwater Road in Bonita, or the North Shelter at 2481 Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad.
