ENCINITAS–A driver suspected of DUI drove off the road and struck a pedestrian at the Encinitas Transit Center, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

The Sheriff’s Department Communication Center received a report at about 10:45 a.m. of the collision in the area of Vulcan Avenue and D Street in Encinitas.

Following the collision, the vehicle became disabled in the roadway and the driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot followed by several bystanders. A Sheriff’s sergeant in the area of the collision located the driver. The male driver was arrested for felony hit and run and booked into Vista Detention Facility following medical release.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital with major injuries. Drugs or alcohol are suspected to have contributed to the collision. The pedestrian is currently unidentified.

Anyone with knowledge of the pedestrian’s identity or any witnesses to the collision should call Sheriff’s Traffic Investigators at (760) 966-3590.
