ENCINITAS–An unidentified pedestrian who walked toward the railroad tracks as a southbound Amtrak train was approaching was struck and killed, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said Wednesday.
At approximately 12:25 pm, San Diego County Sheriff’s Rail Enforcement Deputies responded to investigate a collision between a train and a pedestrian on the railroad tracks near the 1500 block of North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas.
Witnesses saw the man walking toward the railroad tracks as the train was approaching. The train operator activated the horn and emergency braking system, but was unable to stop the train before it struck the man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Railroad Enforcement Unit is continuing.
