OCEANSIDE–A pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday as he walked across a road in downtown Oceanside, according to the Oceanside Police Department.
The collision occurred on North Coast Highway at Sportfisher Drive. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male lying on the east sidewalk. The 22-year-old male pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where despite lifesaving measures taken, he succumbed to his injuries and died a short time later.
Based on physical evidence at the scene, and the statement of the driver involved, it appears that the victim was crossing North Coast Highway at or near the intersection when he was hit by the car traveling on the same highway. The driver immediately stopped and waited for police to arrive. The driver was not injured. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision and the driver, William Vaden 31, was arrested for DUI. The name of the deceased has not been released pending family notification.
The investigation is ongoing.
