Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Train

September 26, 2016 By sdcnews

DEL MAR–A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train struck and killed a pedestrian as he stood by the tracks on the bluffs in Del Mar.

On Saturday, just after  9 p.m., Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement deputies responded to a collision that occurred on the tracks north of 13th Street.

A northbound BNSF train was traveling at approximately 40 miles per hour when the engineer observed three pedestrian trespassers standing near the railroad tracks. One trespasser was utilizing the camera on his mobile device near the tracks before being struck by the train. The engineer activated the warning horn and the bright lighting system on the train, but the pedestrians did not move.

The pedestrian was struck by the train and succumbed to his injuries. The Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit is handling the investigation.
