Pedestrian Fatally Injured In Sprinter Train Collision

February 10, 2016 By sdcnews

SAN MARCOS–A pedestrian standing near the railroad tracks was struck and killed by a Sprinter train, Sheriff’s deputies said Tuesday.

Deputies say the collision occurred on the railroad tracks at milepost marker 118.9, which is the pedestrian crossing at Marcos Street in San Marcos.

A westbound Sprinter train was traveling at approximately 45 miles per hours when the operator observed a pedestrian next to the tracks.

The Sprinter train had activated its emergency braking system upon first seeing the pedestrian, but was unable to stop prior to the collision. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit is investigating the accident.

Anyone with information about the accident can call the Sheriff’s Department non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
