OCEANSIDE–A vehicle collision that erupted into flames claimed the life of a passenger Wednesday in Oceanside, authorities said.
Oceanside police officers on patrol drove up on a collision that occurred at approximately 11:04 a.m. on Mission Avenue at Airport Road. They found a sedan that had rear-ended a Pepsi delivery truck on Mission Avenue with two people in the car. The vehicle caught fire and the officers pulled both the driver and passenger from the vehicle. The passenger was unconscious and not breathing. Officers performed CPR on the victim. Oceanside Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported the passenger to the hospital where he later died. The driver was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to witnesses, the sedan was traveling westbound on Mission Avenue at a high rate of speed in the number one lane. For an unknown reason, the driver changed abruptly to the number two lane and drove directly into the rear of a Pepsi delivery truck that was parked with its hazard lights flashing, on the side of the road. The driver of the Pepsi truck was not inside his vehicle at the time of the collision.
The passenger’s name is being withheld pending notification to the family. The investigation into the cause of the collision is still ongoing.
