Padres welcome Grammy award winner Alicia Villarreal

June 2, 2010 By Staff

The San Diego Padres announced today the post-game concert performer for this year’s Fiesta con los Padres & Viva North County! celebration on June 12 will be Latin Grammy Award winner Alicia Villarreal. The ranchera singer will perform live at Park at the Park for an hour, following the conclusion of the Padres’ game against the Seattle Mariners.

Villarreal first gained acclaim as the lead vocalist of the band Grupo Límite, which released six albums together. In 2001, Villarreal released her first solo album, Soy Lo Prohibido, which launched the single Te Quedo Grande la Yegua. In 2004, after parting ways with her band mates, Villarreal released her second solo album, Cuando el Corazón se Cruza. Produced by her current husband, Cruz Martínez, it has garnered several international awards. In 2006, her third solo album, Orgullo De Mujer featured the single Insensible a Tí. It became the theme song for the telenovela Duelo de Pasiones, in which Villarreal made her acting debut. After a nearly a three-year hiatus, Villarreal released the album, La Jefa, in June 2009, with the lead single of Caso Perdido. The album debuted at number one on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums and overall at number four on its Latin Albums chart.

Fiesta con los Padres & Viva North County! is a celebration of the region’s Latino culture and North County community heroes. Fans can enjoy mariachi music and ballet folklorico dancers around PETCO Park before and during the game. Villarreal’s concert is free at the Park at the Park after the game, for those with a game ticket. This year, the Padres have committed to giving $10,000 to non-profit organizations serving Latino communities over the course of three “Family Fiesta” games. Before the game, the Padres Foundation will present a check to Encuentros of North County, a leadership and mentoring organization for teenage boys.

Tickets for Fiesta con los Padres start as low as $5 and can be purchased via padres.com, padresbeisbol.com, by calling (619) 795-5555, or visiting any PETCO Park ticket window. Fans in Mexico can also purchase tickets by calling (664) 684-0227, or by visiting the Padres Store at the Plaza Rio Mall in Tijuana. The team is also offering a special bus and game ticket package to help fans more easily reach the game from the Tijuana Store.
