The San Diego Padres announced that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Adam Russell from Triple-A Portland and placed right-handed pitcher Chris Young on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 7) with a strained right shoulder.
Russell, 26, made a team-high 11 appearances in Spring Training this year, posting a 2.45 ERA (3 ER/11.0 IP) with 10 strikeouts before being optioned to Portland. He made 15 relief appearances for the Padres last year, going 3-1 with a 3.65 ERA (5 ER/12.1 IP).
Young, 30, made one start for San Diego this year, picking up the win after 6.0 scoreless, one-hit innings April 7 at Arizona. Over parts of seven Major League seasons with the Texas Rangers (2004-05) and Padres (2006-10), he is 47-34 with a 3.84 ERA (315 ER/737.2 IP) in 132 starts.
