Padres players turn celebrity waiters for STAR/PAL youth luncheon

April 27, 2010 By Staff

SAN DIEGO–This Friday, San Diego Padres players will tie on their aprons for the “Superheroes for Youth” 10th Annual Celebrity Waiter Luncheon, benefiting STAR/PAL. For the second year in a row, Padres pitcher Heath Bell will serve as Honorary Co-Chair of the event, along with San Diego Chargers Defensive End Luis Castillo. Bell will be joined by several of his Padres teammates and members of the Pad Squad, in waiting on tables and entertaining guests in exchange for cash tips. All donations raised will benefit STAR/PAL youth programs. 2009’s Celebrity Waiter Luncheon raised nearly $75,000.

COX/Channel 4 San Diego’s Mark Grant will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the luncheon. Other local celebrities slated to wait on tables include Chargers players, Charger Girls, San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne, Sam the Cooking Guy, COX/Channel 4 San Diego’s Jane Mitchell and ABC’s The Bachelorette contestants Kiptyn Locke and Julien Hug.

Doors of the Balboa Park Club open at 11:00 a.m. Lunch, provided by Oggi’s Pizza & Brewing Co., will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are still available by contacting Christine Reed at 619.531.2559.

STAR/PAL is a non-profit organization with a mission that brings youth and law enforcement together today to build safer communities tomorrow. STAR/PAL offers free educational, athletic and recreational programs catering to children, ages 6-17, in underserved and inner-city neighborhoods across San Diego. STAR/PAL programs embody positive youth development, while promoting academic success through structured activities and mentorship.

Each year, the San Diego Padres partner with STAR/PAL to host more than 1,000 inner-city youths at five geographically-diverse instructional baseball camps. Additionally, more than 7,000 local disadvantaged children benefit annually from summer baseball leagues that are co-sponsored by the Padres, STAR/PAL and San Diego Parks and Recreation.
