The San Diego Padres placed outfielder Kyle Blanks on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 18) with a strained right elbow and recalled right-handed pitcher Adam Russell from Triple-A Portland.
Russell, 27, is making his third stint with the Padres this season. He was first recalled from Portland on April 12 and worked three scoreless outings (4.1 IP), not allowing a hit to 13 total batters faced (one walk) before being optioned back to Portland on April 18. Russell was later recalled 5/11 and did not make an appearance before being optioned 5/15. He has made 12 appearances for the Beavers, going 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA (12 ER/14.0 IP). Russell went 3-1 with a 3.65 ERA (5 ER/12.1 IP) over 15 appearances for the Padres last season after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the Jake Peavy trade on July 31.
Blanks, 23, has played in 33 games for the Padres this season, hitting .157 (16-for-102) with six doubles, one triple, three home runs, 15 RBI and 14 runs scored. He made his Major League debut in 2009 and has combined to hit .212 (53-for-250) with 15 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 37 RBI and 38 runs scored in 87 games over his two years in the Big Leagues.
