Oceanside, CA–The Oceanside Police Department Monday was temporarily evacuated after a woman walked into the front lobby to turn in a grenade in a plastic bag, authorities said.
The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. at police headquarters at 3855 Mission Avenue, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said.
Staff members had the woman place the grenade in one of the interview rooms and evacuated the lobby. Several offices in the main police facility were also evacuated. After sending the San Diego County Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson Unit a photograph of the item, they advised the device was a “training” grenade, capable of creating a small explosion but nothing of significance and referred the response to the U.S. Marine Corps explosive unit at Camp Pendleton.
Oceanside police remind residents not to pick up or touch any explosive devices. Call police and an officer will respond to the device’s location.
