OCEANSIDE–The Oceanside City Council August 25 unanimously adopted a Resolution establishing “Zero Waste” as a goal in order to eliminate waste and pollution in the manufacture, use, storage, and recycling of materials. Within this resolution, the City Council established a milestone of 75% landfill diversion by the year 2020, and directed staff to create a Strategic Resource Management Plan to accomplish this goal.
Through development of a plan and implementation of this Resolution, the City’s goal is to eliminate the entire concept of waste through education, heavy resource recovery, industrial design, and market development within the local community.
Through this effort, Oceanside has joined the State of California, and several other local cities, including: El Cajon, Burbank, Santa Monica, City and County of San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Del Norte County, San Luis Obispo County, and Santa Cruz County. Oceanside hopes this goal will improve sustainability and waste reduction goals, as well as reverse growing local/regional health and financial liabilities from waste disposal, while being a key element of local economic and workforce development.
