New Vision Theatre to present summer plays

July 16, 2010 By Staff

OCEANSIDE–New Vision Theatre Company, operating Oceanside’s Sunshine Brooks Theatre, will present the 5th annual Summer Shorts (a collection of 8 ten minute unpublished plays) at Sunshine Brooks Theatre, 217 North Coast Highway in Oceanside.

Performances are July 16 to August 1, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. Opening night gala will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 16 with refreshments and appetizers.

The idea of Summer Shorts festival was initially conceived at the Camino Real Playhouse in San Juan Capistrano, where John and Yolanda Kalb (artistic directors of New Vision Theatre Co) originally came from. Before bringing this short play format onto Oceanside’s stage, John and Yolanda served in acting, judging, and directing capacities for Camino’s “Showoff” annual series, which had been going on for twelve years. The few plays for Summer Shorts are annually selected from at least 400 various playwrights’ works. Some are by local writers. Each submission is subjected to a review by a special reading committee of this community theater months ahead of the production. The committee was headed this year by Naomi Olson, who holds a theater degree and has an extensive directing and acting background from Minnesota, Las Vegas, and North San Diego County. Most short plays are of humorous nature. The numerous cast is comprised of acting talent local to our North County. This collaborative effort of local writers, directors, and acting talent will ensure fun for tastes of all viewers as the production consists of different genres and presents the audience a judging opportunity. After the show, viewers get a chance to cast their votes for their favorite play (by selecting it right on the program’s insert), and the winning work is announced at the conclusion of the festival.
