POWAY–A motorist was burned to death when the victim was struck head on by another vehicle on Highway 67, Sheriff’s traffic investigators said Sunday.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a three vehicle collision on Hwy 67 just south of Cloudy Moon Drive. Callers reported one of the vehicles was on fire. Deputies arrived on scene but were unable to extricate the victim due to the intensity of the flames. Cal Fire responded and extinguished the vehicle.
A full size Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 51-year-old male was traveling northbound on Hwy 67 and veered into the southbound lane. The truck collided with the rear quarter panel of a late model Buick sedan and struck a Mini Cooper head on. The occupants of the Buick sustained minor injuries. The driver of the truck was transported to Palomar Hospital and treated for a broken wrist. He was arrested on alcohol related charges including felony vehicular manslaughter.
The highway remained closed until approximately 1:30 a.m. due to the nature of the investigation. Poway authorities are conducting a full collision investigation.
