Mobile Home Fire Injures Resident

March 13, 2013 By sdcnews

SPRING VALLEY–Two residents escaped from their mobile home after it was engulfed in flames on Tuesday, fire officials say.

The fire broke out at the mobile home, located in the Avalon Estates on the 1200 block of Grand Avenue in Spring Valley.

Two of the family’s four residents were home when the fire broke out. One resident, a female broke a bedroom window and escaped the flames. The other person home, a young man suffered severe to moderate burns over an estimated 25-percent of his body as he ran through the flames to escape from the front door. He was given stabilizing care on the scene and then rushed to the UCSD Burn Center.

Neighbors did report hearing smoke alarms sounding. The double wide mobile home was constructed with two doors, but one was blocked with an upright freezer, preventing it from being used as an exit.

CAL FIRE/San Miguel Fire District Firefighters, crews from San Diego and Lemon Grove responded to help keep the damage to a single unit.

No other units were damaged; the estimated loss for structure and contents is $100,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The San Diego Chapter of the American Red Cross is now assisting the family with their immediate needs.
