SAN DIEGO–For the first time in its nearly 32-year history, Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park will open on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day’s events will feature live performance of American piano music between 1 and 3 p.m. Selections will include ragtime, music by Fats Waller and George Gershwin, traditional songs and popular standards. Also planned in honor of the holiday is a gift from The Collectors’ Gallery Museum store with every purchase of $25 or more. Shoppers will receive a copy of the Museum’s colorful publication, American Expressions of Liberty – Art of the People, by the People, for the People.
“Opening this Memorial Day is a first for the Museum,” says Director Rob Sidner. “We look forward to offering visitors to Balboa Park an enriching family experience.”
On view at the Museum are ¡Viva Mexico! – Heroes and Artisans, Sonabai – Another Way of Seeing, Fisch Out of Water – Sea Creatures of Arline Fisch, Transformed By Fire – June Schwarcz Enamel Vessels and Fifty-Six Chinese Hatboxes – and one hat.
