San Diego, CA–A 64-year-old man found dead in his cell this week died of natural causes, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office says.
The Medical Examiner’s Office conducted the autopsy of the inmate who died at the San Diego Central Jail in the early morning of May 25.
“Out of respect for his family, we are still unable to release the man’s name until his next of kin has been located and notified of his passing. The Sheriff’s family liaison officer will remain available for any family members located, the Sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Deputies at the San Diego Central Jail were conducting security checks on the 7th floor. They located an unresponsive inmate who was housed alone in his cell. Deputies entered the cell and immediately began life-saving measures. Deputies, as well as medical staff, provided CPR until paramedics arrived. Despite their best efforts, the man was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m.
Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the incident.
