SAN DIEGO–A Harbor police officer fatally shot a man during a physical altercation near a hotel in the Roseville and Fleet Ridge District, San Diego police said Wednesday.
A San Diego Harbor police officer was on patrol in the 4800 block of North Harbor Drive when he saw a black male checking vehicles in the south parking lot. The officer, believing the man was possibly looking to burglarize the vehicles, parked his patrol vehicle along the north curbline and exited his vehicle. The officer contacted the man in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn and was immediately attacked by the man.
The man and the officer fell to the ground as the fight continued. During the struggle, the officer’s taser was deployed, striking both the officer and the man. The man continued to fight and attempted to take the officer’s handgun from his holster. The officer was able to stand as the man continued the assault and the attempts to take his weapon.
Fearing for his safety and the safety of the public, the officer fired one round from his weapon, striking the man in the torso.
Additional police officers responded and attempted life saving measures, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of the suspect is unknown at this time.
The officer was transported to UCSD Hospital with moderate injuries.
The homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
The officer involved in this incident has been with the San Diego Harbor Police Department for 9 years.
