Man riding e-bike dies in traffic collision in Solana Beach

February 27, 2022 By sdcnews

By Gina Yarbrough

Solana Beach, CA–A 65-year-old man riding his newly purchased electric bicycle for the first time was killed Saturday afternoon when he lost control and was fatally struck by a vehicle in Solana Beach.

The bicyclist was riding northbound on Highway 101 from Lomas Santa Fe in the designated bicycle lane. As he attempted to pass a slower bicyclist traveling in the same direction his E-bike began to wobble and he fell into the nearest lane of traffic that was occupied by a slow-moving Dodge truck. The truck then collided with the man, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

Paramedics arrived at the location and transported him to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla where he died of his injuries.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the collision, authorities said

The Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team and traffic deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station are investigating the incident.

Anyone with information about this incident can call the Sheriff’s Department non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
