San Diego, CA–A man found unresponsive in a cell at the San Diego Central Jail on Monday was pronounced dead by medical personnel, authorities said.
Sheriff’s Department investigators were notified of the death, just before 9:30 p.m., of 67-year-old Robert Shuey, an individual in Sheriff’s custody.
Shuey was arrested on February 20 by the Oceanside Police Department for DUI following a vehicle collision that resulted in serious injury to a motorcyclist.
The officers took Shuey for a medical evaluation after his arrest, and on February 21, just before 4 a.m. He was cleared from the hospital and booked into the Vista Detention Facility. The same day, around 11 a.m., Shuey was taken to the San Diego jail where he was housed, Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Chris Steffen said in a release.
During an hourly safety check, around 8 p.m., Shuey was found unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately responded to the location and began CPR. Paramedics arrived and took over life-saving measures. Shuey was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital.
The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is investigating the cause and manner of death.
The Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board Executive Officer was notified of this incident.
