Man arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in Encinitas

October 1, 2021 By sdcnews

By Gina Yarbrough

Encinitas, CA–A 32-year-old man Wednesday was arrested in connection with a sexual assault that occurred on September 17 in Encinitas, the Sheriff’s office said.

The San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Maynor Ricardo Funes after he left a residence in the 1400 block of Hermes Avenue in Encinitas. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility facing burglary and sexual assault charges, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lieutenant Joel Stranger said.

A woman told deputies she woke up to a man sexually assaulting her. She was able to chase the man out of the apartment, located in the 2000 block of Carol View Drive.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Sexual Assault Unit conducted an extensive investigation and identified Funes.

While he was arrested only for that incident, investigators are searching for anyone in the area who may have experienced something similar to come forward and report it.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call the Sheriff’s Sexual Assault Unit at (858) 285-6222. After business hours, call the Sheriff’s 24-hour non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200. For anonymous tips contact Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
