ENCINITAS–A unidentified pedestrian on a railroad track was fatally struck by an oncoming Amtrak train Saturday morning in Encinitas, San Diego Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit said.
On December 29, at approximately 5:30 a.m., deputies from the San Diego Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded to an Amtrak train collision near the intersection of San Elijo Avenue and Cornish Drive.
The Amtrak train was traveling northbound at approximately 60 to 65 miles per hour. While traveling, the train engineer observed an unknown adult subject running towards the train tracks from the dirt banks on the east side. The engineer activated the train’s horn to notify the subject of the approaching train. The pedestrian continued running towards the tracks and dove onto the train tracks in front of the approaching train. The engineer immediately activated emergency braking but was unable to stop before the train collided with the pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
