Carlsbad, CA–A Carlsbad man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of burglary and negligent discharge of a firearm during a dispute with another man over personal property, Carlsbad police said.
Officers arrested 63-year-old David Chappee at 2:45 p.m. after he turned himself in at the Carlsbad Police Department. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
Carlsbad police dispatch Monday received a call shortly before 10 p.m. from a Fallbrook resident stating that his home had been burglarized. He also reported that Chappee allegedly was the suspect in the burglary and that he was headed to his Carlsbad residence to collect his belongings. The victim asked police to conduct a “keep the peace” while he contacted Chappee.
While officers were en route to the 7200 block of Ponto Drive, they received a second call from the victim reporting that he had arrived at the home and an altercation with Chappee resulted in him discharging a firearm. The victim was not injured.
The Carlsbad SWAT Unit, a K9 team and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department helicopter-ASTREA, were called to assist with the search of Chappee. The search and investigation continued throughout the night and into the next day.
The investigation of the incident is ongoing.
