OCEANSIDE–Fifteen students from five different high schools shared $30,000 in scholarship funds as recipients of the 2012 City of Oceanside – Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Awards.
The students were introduced at the 21st annual garden reception, which was held on June 1 at the home of Stephen and Janet Lacy. The garden reception is the sole fundraising event for the scholarship program.
The 2012 MLK recipients were: Romelle Austin, Crystal Board, Guya Frazier, Dominique Love, Jesenia Martinez, George Matta, Catherine Mitchell, Aimee Nava, Meschelle Noble, Sabrina Patterson, Santos Penaflor, Mikaela Stanton, Andrew Williams, and Beatrice Zuniga.
The City of Oceanside sponsored the event, but local business and corporate sponsors provide funds for the reception.
The program has awarded $505,000 to 245 students since the first scholarships were established in 1993.
All funds raised at the garden reception go directly to the scholarship program.
