San Diego, CA–February is a month to discover new talent as La Jolla Music Society brings exciting young performers to the world-class Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center.

From innovative tap dance and award-winning Nordic folk to dinosaur discoveries and Irish jigs with a twist, it’s all happening in the heart of La Jolla.

The ProtoStar Innovative Series begins on Feb. 4 in The Baker-Baum Concert Hall with Counterpoint, a collaboration between acclaimed pianist and composer Conrad Tao and choreographer and star tap dancer Caleb Teicher, blending their different perspectives and talents in harmonic, rhythmic, and theatrical counterpoint. The diverse program includes the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Art Tatum’s stride piano, and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

Dreamers’ Circus returns to The JAI for two shows on Feb. 9. Contemporary and innovative in their approach, they draw inspiration from the deep traditions of folk music of Scandinavia and reshape them into something bright, shiny, and new. Their award-winning art embraces music from Denmark and Sweden as well as Iceland, Finland, and the far reaches of the windswept Faroe Islands.

On Feb. 10, the Nat Geo Live Speaker Series continues with the fascinating tale of Spinosaurus, a prehistoric giant that was nearly lost to science before Nizar Ibrahim, a remarkable young paleontologist, discovered it. With amazing video and photography in The Baker-Baum Concert Hall, Nizar himself will tell the story of Spinosaurus’ discovery, loss, and rediscovery, explaining what makes this ancient monster so unique.

123 Andrés takes over The JAI for two shows on Feb. 12. The Latin Grammy award-winning teaching artists get kids and families excited about learning and moving together in Spanish and English with upbeat pop, creating a winning combination for listeners of any age, featuring first-class musicianship and rich instrumentation.

The white-hot award-winning Irish quintet Goitse brings a vibrant mix of Irish classic jigs and tunes for two shows at The JAI on Feb. 25, combined with their own original compositions for an irrepressible Irish musical experience.

The Baker-Baum Concert Hall on Feb. 26, combines two of the hottest chamber music groups in America today, the Dover Quartet and Escher String Quartet, playing octets by Shostakovich, Mendelssohn, and Enescu.

Closing out February, the brilliant young bassist Xavier Foley is joined by pianist Kelly Lin at The Baker-Baum Concert Hall for an exciting program highlighting the double bass, which is rarely presented as a solo instrument. In addition to cello pieces by Bach and Vivaldi transposed for double bass, the program includes Foley’s own original compositions.
