SAN DIEGO–A person at San Diego Mesa College was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) and may have exposed others, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) reported Tuesday.
HHSA is working closely with school officials to notify individuals who were potentially exposed between Oct. 23 and Dec. 17, 2015.
“Most people who are exposed to TB do not develop the disease, but those who have been exposed need to be identified because it can be treated and cured with medication,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.
San Diego Mesa College will provide no-cost testing to students, faculty and staff who were potentially exposed at the Mesa College Student Health Services, Room I4-209 beginning on Feb. 1 and continuing as needed.
Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.

TB in not uncommon in the San Diego region but has levelled off in recent years. There were 234 cases reported in 2015. In 2014, 220 cases were reported in the county.
