SAN DIEGO–San Diego detectives are confirming the arrest of Harvey Henry Duson, 45, in connection with the violent home invasion robbery that occurred last month at the Sandburg Avenue residence of former City Councilmember Harry Mathis.
On Wednesday, Duson had been identified as a suspect wanted for the January 11 home invasion. Duson and two other armed suspects beat Mathis and threatened his wife and a concerned neighbor during the attack. The Mathis’ were forced to open a safe inside the home and later placed in a bathroom and told to remain there. They soon learned Duson and his accomplices set two separate fires inside the residence.
During the investigation, Robbery Unit detectives identified Duson as one of the suspects. Detectives planned to arrest Duson when he reported to a meeting with his State Parole agent in El Cajon on Tuesday; however, he did not attend the meeting, claiming his car was disabled on Interstate 8. Duson’s vehicle was quickly located and later discovered to be unoccupied.
Subsequent follow-up investigation led detectives to believe that Duson had fled to Las Vegas, Nevada. In an unrelated traffic contact initiated by an officer of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, an attempt was made to arrest Duson for a parole violation warrant. Duson led officers on a high speed pursuit that crossed into Utah and Nevada before he finally crashed following a deployment of spike strips. Duson collided with another motorist during that incident.
Harvey Henry Duson is currently under arrest and under guard at a Las Vegas area hospital where he is being treated for injuries he received as a result of the crash. San Diego Police Robbery Unit detectives are in Las Vegas conducting follow-ups.
