SAN DIEGO–San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl officials said Thursday that they’ve joined forces with an Orange County-based non-profit event to help San Diego graduating high school student-athletes extend their football playing careers, get into college and receive scholarship opportunities.
The California Showcase, in association with the SDCCU Holiday Bowl and the National Football Foundation, is presented by former longtime UCLA Bruins head coach, Terry Donahue. It’s a free one-day event for high school seniors to display their skills to Division II, III, NAIA and community college football programs. Since 2013 the event has helped over 900 student-athletes get on to college football rosters and earn more than $28 million in financial aid.
The 2020 event is Saturday, February 22 at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine. The SDCCU Holiday Bowl will arrange for busses to transport San Diego participants to and from the event. Interested seniors can receive information and register for the event at www.HolidayBowl.com/showcase.
“We are thrilled to partner with this effort that has done amazing work for high school graduating seniors who want to go to college and continue playing football,” said Mark Neville, CEO of the SDCCU Holiday Bowl. “Approximately one in three kids who participate get invited to college football rosters and become recipients of significant scholarship contributions. We want to help San Diego kids take advantage of this opportunity and we feel this partnership is a great way to do that.”
Participants must be graduating seniors and meet one of the three academic requirements: a 2.5 GPA, a SAT score of 860 or better, or an ACT score of 16 or better. Participants must also not have already accepted a scholarship from a Division I football program.
“It’s tremendous that we are able to join forces with the SDCCU Holiday Bowl in San Diego,” said Coach Donahue. “The CA Showcase has been working to tap into the SD market and we’ve now found a way to get that done. This bowl game has a stellar reputation all around the country. It’s awesome that we’re now partners.”
The 2019 San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl kicks off at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27 at SDCCU Stadium. The game matches top teams from the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences. The game is organized by the non-profit San Diego Bowl Game Association to benefit the San Diego region by generating tourism, exposure and economic benefit. Last year’s game between the Northwestern Wildcats and Utah Utes generated $49.2 million for the region. The Wildcats beat the Utes 31-22. Tickets can be purchased at www.HolidayBowl.com/tickets.
