Gunman Fatally Shoots One Woman, Injures 7 Others

May 1, 2017 By sdcnews

SAN DIEGO–A gunman fatally shot one woman and injured seven people at an apartment complex birthday party in the pool, San Diego police said Sunday evening.

The gunman, Peter Selis, 49, a resident at the apartment, opened fire at the group while he sat near the pool area drinking beer, according to authorities. Four black women, two black men, and one Hispanic man were shot during the rampage. Paramedics took the victims to local area hospitals. One women later died. The other victims’ conditions are unknown.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman held a press conference Sunday evening to update the media on the status of the investigation.

“Our communications division received numerous calls regarding several people that have been shot here in the pool area,” Zimmerman said. “Our helicopter arrived on scene and saw that there were numerous victims in the pool area.”

Zimmerman said the suspect was still in the pool area, and was armed with a handgun.

The first three officers arrived at the apartment complex, and the helicopter unit notified police on the ground that the gunman was reloading and shooting into the pool party group, according to Zimmerman. The police officers went to the pool area and confronted the suspect who was still armed. The officers shot the gunman when he pointed his weapon at them. The gunman died at the scene.

“We don’t know what the motive is for the shooting,” Zimmerman said.

The investigation is on-going.
