SAN DIEGO–San Diego nonprofit Fresh Start Surgical Gifts hosted its 28th annual Gala ‘Bootleggers Ball’ on Oct. 19 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine.

Dr. Greg Ostrow, director of pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley, and his wife Dr. Stacy Ostrow served as the event’s honorary chairs. Dr. Ostrow has been a Fresh Start volunteer surgeon for 12 years.

At the gala, Fresh Start surpassed its fundraising goal of $200,000 and raised over $280,000 through donations from sponsors and over 240 attendees of which 100 percent of contributions will go directly toward the organization’s medical program. The Fresh Start Medical Program provides the gift of reconstructive surgery and other healthcare services to children with physical deformities caused by birth defects, accidents, abuse or disease.

“The Bootleggers Ball celebrated the children and families we’ve served and the many that are to come,” said Fresh Start CEO Shari Brasher. “With the support of our sponsors and all-volunteer team of surgeons and supporters, Fresh Start is able to provide families with the medical care they deserve.”

Former Fresh Start patient, Callie Hill, who was born with hemangioma, served as the event’s featured speaker. Callie is now a 27-year-old oncology nurse, a career path she was inspired to pursue after receiving help from Fresh Start.

“Not only was my life changed physically, but I gained confidence due to the team, doctors and volunteers at Fresh Start,” said Hill.

Guests enjoyed a jazzy evening, including a cocktail reception, a live/silent auction, dinner, live music by The Heroes and casino table games.
