DEL MAR–Another horse died from its injuries while training at the Del Mar race track.
Del Mar officials Monday said the horse, a 3-year-old filly named Bri Bri had to be euthanized after it suffered a serious injury to her pelvis during training. The horse was trained by Jim Cassidy.
“We are deeply sorry for her and her human connections,” the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club said in a written statement.
Kathy Guillermo, senior vice president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an animal rights organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, released a statement on the death.
“While we urge state racing officials to conduct a full investigation into the death of 3-year-old Bri Bri, trainer Jim Cassidy owes the public an immediate explanation, as does trainer Bob Baffert, whose horse Bowl of Soul died less than two weeks ago. It’s time that trainers came clean about what condition their horses are in, what medications they’re on, what treatments they may have had to block pain and keep them running when they shouldn’t be, and how such young horses can break bones while training. There’s no wet track or rain to blame here.”
It was the fourth death of a horse at the race track since July 17.
